In an online world, far far away, a custom map named Aeon of
Strife was born as a custom map of Starcraft. Little did the developers know at
the time, but this was to be the "Big Bang” to the MOBA (Multiplayer Online
Battle Arena) series.
Two armies, deadlocked in battle, sending forth groups of
minions in an attempt to destroy the opposing teams throne. Now, for centuries,
the war has still not ended, so in a new age of combat, champions arose. Each
possessing personalized combat skills, a vast knowledge of combat, and being a
true veteran of war. These heroes are controlled by the player, in an attempt
to gain levels by killing the minions and opposite teams champions. With one
purpose, the destruction of the throne, these heroes are used to turn the tide
of battle between good and evil.
From this map, the massively popular Defense of the Ancients (Dota) series was born, also on a blizzard title, named Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos. With the overall format of the good vs. evil, eternal war and a vast array of heroes, we see the gameplay style picking up pace and becoming more and more popular amongst online players. With the huge surge in online eSports, and the ever-changing balances made towards the game, other developers seen an opportunity and ventured into this online market.
